Every 22 minutes, a woman is being raped in India. Shocked? You should be. These are reported figures which means that actual figures would be much higher! This piece is intended to shock you into action — to make the choice to protect yourself! Women’s safety & self defense is not something we should just debate upon or expect someone else to do something about. Do not live in fear that one day you may be counted as a statistic. Making the decision to protect yourself could be the difference between life and death!
Change — System or Self?
Debates rage on about what must be done to ensure that such assaults, harassments and rapes are stopped. What must be done to make the world a safer place for women? What must be done to empower women? How can we change the prevalent attitudes and systems that enable such attacks? While the debate continues on how to make society a safer place for women to live in, this article intends to inspire women to change — resulting in empowerment at the level of the individual.
“The individual is more important than any established system.” — Bruce Lee
Why Not Fallback on Family?
Growing up, one looks to the immediate family for protection. The parents/brothers/cousins protect the girl from untoward attention where & when needed. Over time, friends forage a bond and follow suit forming a protective barrier around the individual shielding her from harm. The young adult now separated from family looks for a potential partner who would do the same and play the role of a protector. Of course women have rebelled against playing the ‘Damsel in Distress’ role. And yet, with every generation the cycle continues.
So what about Social Support Systems?
We as members of society seek & expect protection from passers by, communities, social groups, civic bodies, policing forces, law enforcement, courts of law and government. That is why we live together. That said, every individual member should develop the capability to protect oneself. Think of self-defence as First Aid — while support systems are necessary, timely action during the incident is vital and can increase chances of survival exponentially.
Women’s Safety & Self Defense – Women are NOT Weak!
We have come a long way from neanderthal times when a woman had to fight as well as a man, to survive. Today we as humans (regardless of gender) have lost the ability to fight to survive. The will & skill to survive and triumph against the odds always has and always will come from within. Protect yourself! You, dear woman, are capable, and exercising this ability will only make you more confident. Women’s safety & self defense is a woman’s right and she possesses the inherent ability.
Why Flower, and what is this Power?
“A woman is like a flower..” said the lawyer of a rapist, while arguing that it isn’t his client’s fault that the ‘flower’ was unprotected and thus fell victim. Leaving aside the furore that this statement generated for a moment, let us consider the statement. You, dear woman are indeed a beautiful flower, but you are the rose AND the thorn! You don’t need to be protected by anybody else — no parent, no brother, no lover, no spouse, no police, no court, no government. Just YOU! Women’s Safety & Self Defense is vital to one’s survival.
